Arkie’s Pilgrimage to the Next Big Thing by Lisa Walker
Books are like life. Sometimes in life you need a stiff drink, other times, a milkshake.
And so it is with books – sometimes it’s War and Peace and then, other days, it’s titles like Arkie’s Pilgrimage to the Next Big Thing. We are complex creatures like that and thankfully there are beverages and books to suits all our moods.
My reading mood of late has been whimsy. I needed a lighthearted jaunt, somewhat frothy, but sweet and delicious. Thanks Lisa Walker because you delivered – this is a lovely tale about a very modern pilgrimage and come on, who doesn’t need one of those !
Arkie was a successful trend-spotter, advising companies on ‘the next big thing’ until one day, her million dollar mojo disappears along with her marriage. Enter Haruko, an eccentric new friend who convinces Arkie to take a pilgrimage to the sacred sites of Japan to rediscover her ju-ju.
However with absolutely no moula as a result of her lost mojo, Arkie decides to journey to all of Australia’s Big Things instead – you know those…..the big Pineapple, big Banana, big Shell, the big Prawn. Australia is famous for them and yes, they can inspire cultural cringe in us, however at the hands of the author we are taken on an inspirational and lovely adventure to the foot of them all.
It is a fun book with a big idea and it left me feeling full and happy.
Exactly like how I feel at the end of really good milkshake.
But that is just my two cents worth….
