What Happened to Nina by Dervla McTiernan

Having read this, I know what happened to Nina. I won’t tell you of course, but good news for you is that you don’t have to wait till the end of the book to find out if you do read it (and I think you should….all the bookshops clearly agree as they’ve got this one front and centre).

You find out pretty quickly actually what happened to Nina but even this revelation did not stop me from going to the back of the book to try and found out how it all ends. I never ever, ever, ever, ever do that. Ever! But Dervla McTiernan made me desperate for answers.

I am not sure if the early reveal was genius or a mistake to be honest.

I personally think you know what happened to Nina before the official ta-da moment (or I did because as a closet detective I’m an old hand) but you become so obsessed with trying to figure out how it all wraps up, you do stupid things and read the last page. I am ashamed of myself.

On a positive, if you are in an utter reading rut and need a turbo charge to break the drought, you definitely need to go looking for what happened to Nina. You’ll read like a person possessed.

Nina is in a relationship with Simon. He’s wealthy, good looking. They are the perfect couple who love to hike especially near Simon’s family holiday home. After a weekend hiking, only Simon returns and his explanation about why Nina is not with him doesn’t quite add up. The police are called by Nina’s parents. The lawyers and PR firm are called by Simon’s. Battle lines are drawn. Nina’s parents are desperate for answers and Simon’s parents are desperate to protect him and themselves. Ultimately, this really is their story.

Good thrillers aren’t overly complicated, just complicated enough to get you looking for answers in different directions from time to time. This story is much more direct. It is right there in front of you all the time and you know it….how it all plays out in the end though, that small twist of fate, well that is the really clever bit.

But that is just my two cents worth.
