Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
For the love of music, the 70’s and cracking stories, you have to read this book.
Written by Taylor Jenkins Reid and published in March, there has been a lot of hype leading up to its release. It already has its own Spotify playlist and Reece Witherspoon backed Netflix Series. Talk about a cross-disciplinary marketing juggernaut.
Take it from me, there are no other books like this out there on the bookshelves at the moment and it’s an absolute sensation.
Daisy Jones & The Six is the story of a fictional band and its rise to the top. I emphasise fictional, because the documentary writing-style makes it seem real and the characters are so good that every bit of you wants it be true. If you are like me, you will turn the last page and want to listen to the music, see the album covers and read the press.
Set in the 70’s with a backdrop of disco, drugs, recording studios and wild parties, the book begins with two separate stories about musicians on the rise.
In Los Angeles, there is semi-wild “it” girl Daisy Jones with long legs, big brown eyes and attitude to match. Meanwhile in Pennsylvania, a mostly male rock n’ roll band (The Six) are doing well but taking themselves and their music way to seriously.
With nothing in common but bad drug habits and the same record label, the two acts are pushed together to perform a duet that goes on to become a number one hit. From there, Daisy is invited to join the band to make an album and dynamics are tested like never before.
Taylor Jenkins Reid is a US writer with four, mostly romance, novels under her belt. I don’t know much about her other work but I’m pretty sure it is this book that she will be referenced by from now on. Unless of course she wants to get into the music business.
